Seventeenth Makrolab information
bulletin.
Activities of the lab in the past few
days:
- cleaning living quarters, storing
unused electronics
- operational receiving of the Marisat
satellites
- preparations for the 1 hour radio
program
- preparations for the lecture for the
100 days program at documenta
In the past few days the lab has seen a
major influx of guests from all kinds
of different places. Wednesday Andreas
Broeckman and part of the V2 crew came,
then Emil Hrvatin and Sandra from
Ljubljana, then another V2 delegation,
yesterday Natasha, Marjan, Petra and
Sebastian came, they’re on their “art
tour”, going also to Münster etc. Have
slept in the lab, me outside on the
“cargo door step” until it started to
rain really heavily in the morning.
Yesterday night, at around 9:30pm also
a 15 strong delegation from the Mute
section of the Hybrid Workspace with
Thorsten and Geert, Josephine Bosma and
all the others. Lots of people but the
lab can host even more, so it wasn’t
bad at all. Explained them a little bit
about the activities going on here,
then everything turned into quite a
fluid event. The stayed until midnight.
But the lab doesn’t have only the night
visitors. Yesterday morning Julia,
“mission impossible” Andreas and some
other people were here from the
documenta office for breakfast. An
early one that almost surprised me,
since the night before was quite
short...
On the activities side; I mainly read,
let the machines run and track and
answer the occasional caller from
documenta halle. It’s an interesting
interim period, where the technical
activities of the lab have reached a
level of stability and now it’s time to
focus on the contextualisation, since
the exhibition will be over very soon,
we have the lecture, the signals event
and then it’s time to plan for the
future and definitely leave this
territory.
1998 spring - Slovenia, overhaul
1999 summer - Northwest territories
2000 September - Negev?
Plans:
- continuation of the communications
project with Brian and possible new
partners also outside of the Makrolab
frame
- invitation to associate researchers,
ornithologists, biologists,
meteorologists to cover the primary
scientific interests of the lab i.e.
birds, flora and fauna in general,
weather systems.
- associating the comm experiment with
the Code Red event in Sydney this fall;
legislative situation, communications-
interception act etc.
- funding opportunities and
possibilities research (for the comm
project and the Makrolab)
Next week - Tuesday - Random Logic
(Miha and Grega) come to the lab to
work on the radio piece. I sincerely
hope we can make something valuable for
everyone involved out of it.
Saturday, Sunday overhaul activities,
with guests at the lab. No answering at
the console.
Chrisitan Mass hasn’t really called in,
just a brief e_mail so it looks we
won’t transmit from the lab in early
September.
The power system is again giving us
some problems, especially the TRACE-
GENERATOR connection. Sometimes, the
generator just won’t stop. Not a very
pleasant occurrence. Or wouldn’t turn
on, which is even worse, but that seems
to have been overcome. The operations
manuals don’t talk about these details,
so we’re left guessing.
Deciding to end meteo activities this
weekend, because there’s no time for
them and next week there’s the radio
work awaiting us.
